As the general manager of Vaquero Advertising, I’ve had the privilege of attending South by Southwest (SXSW) with my team on multiple occasions. We always encourage our team to take advantage of this event due to its significance in the marketing, technology, music, and film industries. Making the most of this experience requires careful planning and strategy.
When taking your team, these are the key points that I recommend:
1. Advance Preparation
Before arriving in Austin, it’s crucial to research and carefully plan your schedule to maximize your time at the event. Review the official SXSW program and select the conferences, panels, and events most relevant to your business and personal goals. Prioritize activities to help you learn, connect, and promote your business.
2.Time Organization
Once at SXSW, effective time management is key. Organize your daily agenda so that you can attend all the important sessions and events but also leave room for spontaneous meetings and networking opportunities. Use mobile apps and planning tools to keep your schedule up to date and receive reminders about your commitments. You can book your sessions beforehand one day before the event. USE IT!
3. Strategic Networking
SXSW is an excellent opportunity to network and expand your professional network. Participate actively in networking events, parties, and social gatherings related to your industry. Be proactive in introducing yourself to new people and establishing meaningful connections. Remember to carry updated business cards or ways to share your information with you, and be prepared to stay in touch after the event. I personally use POPL, and it works great for me.
4. Active Participation
Don’t just be a passive observer at SXSW; actively participate in the conversations and debates taking place during conferences and panels. Ask questions, share your ideas, and contribute to the exchange of knowledge. This is an excellent way to stand out as a thought leader in your field and establish your brand as an authority in the industry.
5. Post-Event Follow-Up
After SXSW, don’t let the connections you’ve made fade away. Follow up with the people you met during the event, whether through personalized emails, social media messages, or invitations for follow-up meetings. Keep the relationship alive and look for opportunities to collaborate in the future.
In summary, maximizing your SXSW experience requires a combination of preparation, organization, and active participation. By following these tips and strategies, you can make the most of this unique event and make it work for you and your business. It is also important to use this event to bond with your team. Everyone has different interests, so be sure to give your team some freedom to explore!
